The Morning Dew / An Buachaill Caol Dubh / Johnny O Leary's / Tá Dhá Ghabhairín Bhuí Agam (Reel / Slow Air / Polkas)

from "B" by Cormac Begley

  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

This album, entitled ‘B’, is my second solo album. ‘B’ also stands for ‘Bass’, ‘Baile’, ‘Beaglaoich’, ‘Begley’, ‘Blueprint’ and a list of insults in both the Irish and English language! For this album I set out to explore the sound potentials of the Bass and Baritone concertina range. With this record being the first solo Bass concertina album of any musical genre, I felt it was important to share and highlight the possibilities of the instrument on a single album.

I asked the west Kerry artist, Dómhnal Ó Bric, to design the fretwork on the front cover of the album. With help from Denis Powell and Pat Lawless, the design was cut into wood and engraved into metal. This fretwork contains a number of images and stories from Baile an Rua Bhroic, Paróiste Mordhach and Corca Dhuibhne (i.e., the Dingle Peninsula).

This hexagonal album cover is bigger in size than my debut solo album.

about

This is a selection of tunes I arranged for Tony McMahon’s 80th birthday party at Liberty Hall. The first tune is a version of the two-part Morning Dew reel recorded by Tony. ‘An Buachaill Caol Dubh’ or ‘The Dark Slender Boy’ is an air I associate with my godfather and first cousin, Gavin Ralston, who sadly left us too soon in 2019. Steve Cooney played this air at his funeral leaving me with a new perspective of the air. I associate the first polka with my dad, who learnt it from Johnny O Leary and I associate the second polka with my uncle Seamus.

This track was done in one take, with no edits and in honor of the great Tony McMahon.
